Pompeii is home to the most important archaeological site in the world, which became a UNESCO heritage site in 1997 and is admired by millions of visitors every year. Precisely because of its enormous importance, Pompeii becomes an essential stop for every tourist who decides to spend a holiday in Campania.

But how to get to Pompeii?

Pompeii enjoys a privileged position close to both Naples and Sorrento, well connected, and can be reached by various means of transport.  Getting to Pompeii is not at all difficult, you can get there by train, by bus or by car if you have one.

It will be up to you to decide on the basis of your needs and your timetable the most convenient means of transport to use to get to Pompeii, leaving from Naples or Sorrento.

How to get to Pompeii from Naples

esterno casa del Menandro Pompei

Pompeii is about 25 km from Naples and can be reached by various means of transport: bus, train or car.

Regardless of the means of transport you decide to use, it takes approximately 30 minutes to reach Pompeii from Naples, obviously the time may vary depending on traffic or train delays.

Getting to Pompeii from Naples by car

To reach Pompeii from Naples by car, take the A3 motorway in the direction of Salerno, drive for about 25 km and take the Pompei Ovest exit, which leads directly to the entrance of the Pompeii ruins.

Once you have taken the exit, turn right and after about 50 metres you will find yourself at the entrance to the excavations; in the vicinity you can find numerous car parks where you can park comfortably.

Getting to Pompeii from Naples by bus

If, on the other hand, you do not have a car or prefer to travel by other means of transport, then you can also reach Pompeii from Naples by coach.

I recommend using the SITA bus line, as it stops right at the entrance to the excavations of Pompeii and is an excellent solution if you are near the port, Piazza Plebiscito or Piazza Municipio.

In fact, the SITA bus terminus is located at the Immacolatella Vecchia gate, which runs alongside the port.

SITA tickets can be purchased directly on site, where you will find the ticket office behind the coaches where you can buy your tickets.

The journey takes approximately 30 minutes (traffic permitting), SITA runs every 30 minutes and the departure times from Naples are as follows: TIMETABLES NAPLES – POMPEI.

Another SITA bus stop for getting to Pompeii is near the Piazza Garibaldi station, in Via Galileo Ferraris, and in this case tickets can be purchased inside the station at the ticket offices.

Getting to Pompeii from Naples by train

If you are near the Piazza Garibaldi station in Naples, you can get to Pompeii by the circumvesuviana train, which stops at Pompei Scavi, exactly at the entrance to the Villa dei Misteri.

The circumvesuviana train is located on the lower level of the central station in Piazza Garibaldi. The route with the stop directly at Pompeii Scavi is the Naples-Sorrento route. It takes about 30 minutes to get to Pompeii from Naples by train.

Tickets can be purchased at the ticket office inside the station.

Below you can download the timetable for the Circumvesuviana trains: TIMETABLES NAPLES – SORRENTO

How to get to Pompeii from Sorrento

Botteghe foro di Pompei

Pompeii is about 17 Km from Sorrento as the crow flies, while travelling by road Pompeii is about 26 Km from Sorrento.

You can get to Pompeii from Sorrento either by car or by train.

The most convenient means of transport is certainly the train, especially if you don’t have much time at your disposal. Since the stretch of the coast, especially in summer, is particularly busy and there are plenty of bends along the way.

Getting to Pompeii from Sorrento by car

To get to Pompeii from Sorrento by car, take the SS145 for about 40 minutes, traffic permitting, and then take the Pompei exit.

Once you have exited, turn first left and then right and follow the road signs, which will take you to the entrance of Pompeii excavations. If you are more comfortable and want to make sure you don’t miss it, insert the navigator with the destination Piazza Esedra Pompei.

Getting to Pompeii from Sorrento by train

To get to Pompeii from Sorrento by train, you must use the Circumvesuviana train.

The Circumvesuviana station is located in the centre of Sorrento, opposite Piazza Angelina Lauro, and the route that will take you to Pompeii is the Sorrento-Naples route, the only one that leaves from here.

Tickets can be bought directly at the station and it takes about 30 minutes to get to Pompei scavi.

The timetables for the Sorrento-Naples route are as follows: TIMETABLES SORRENTO-NAPLES
