The rules for access to the Pompeii ruins are changing. As of November 15, in fact, it will be possible to enter the Park only with a named ticket and a maximum daily limit of 20,000 admissions.
But not only from next summer, time slots will also come into effect . But let’s see in detail this new provision introduced by the Archaeological Park.
The high attendance and large number of admissions recorded especially on the first free Sundays of the month brought to light the need to introduce a daily admission limit. Necessary not only to ease the pressure on the site and protect the archaeological heritage. But also to safeguard visitors in case of a sudden earthquake. This is what the director of the excavations stated.
By easing the pressure on Pompeii, it will also be possible to direct visitors to other archaeological sites and allow them to discover unique heritage outside of Pompeii. Such as Villa of the Mysteries, Stabiae, Boscoreale, Oplonti and Civita Giuliana.
Introduction of the Named Ticket
The new provision will go into effect next November 15, 2024, and the daily limit of 20,000 admissions is also added to the named ticket.
The ticket can be purchased either online at the official website, or at the ticket office by showing a valid ID.
What remains to be understood in the latter case is the speed of the ticket office in issuing named tickets. And in clearing the long lines that are created daily during the busiest periods. This we will only be able to understand once the provision goes into effect. For the time being, we recommend that those who are able, prefer to purchase online. Some will be able to skip the line at the ticket office and go directly to the turnstiles for access.
In any case, we expect some slowdowns for those who will have to ticket directly on site.
The named ticket will be activated for both Pompeii express, Pompeii +, Pompeii 3days and for individual sites.
Time slots during summer periods
As for the introduction of time slots, however, from next April 1, 2025 until October 31, 2025, a time slot system will be in effect during the busiest periods and will be operated as follows:
- From 9.00 am to 12.00 pm a maximum of 15,000 admissions (divided into 12,000 for Pompeii express and 3,000 for Pompeii +)
- From 12 noon to 5:30 p.m. a maximum of 5,000 admissions (divided into 3,000 for Pompeii express and 2,000 for Pompeii +).
We remind you that with Pompeii Express it will be possible to visit the ancient city without the Suburban Villas (so Villa of the Mysteries and Villa Diomede) whose ticket cost is € 18.
With Pompeii Plus in addition to the visit of the ancient city you can also add the visit to the Suburban Villas (Villa dei Misteri + Villa di Diomede + Villa Regina in Boscoreale with Antiquarium ) at a cost of € 22 (shuttle included).
The introduction of time slots, especially during peak periods, will pose a problem for those visitors who are short on time and do not have the opportunity to visit other sites outside of Pompeii. Again, the necessary online purchase will be crucial to avoid any nasty surprises. That is, arriving at the Park and not being able to access it because you have reached the maximum daily admission limit for the Pompeii Express.
We recommend buying online especially in this particular year 2025. As the Jubilee will be held in Italy and an increase in bookings throughout Italy of 30 percent is expected .
