Who lived there, what they did, the leisure activities, the life of its citizens.

In short, every detail has been reconstructed thanks to the finds and the important work of archaeologists. Even the lives and characteristics of two cities seemingly similar, but in reality very different from each other.

From the very first finds, in fact, we immediately realized that we were dealing with two places that were similar in structure and organization, but very different in styles.

While Pompeii was chosen by its inhabitants for its size and commercial importance. Herculaneum, on the other hand, was preferred by wealthier men because of its wonderful location overlooking the sea and pleasant climate.

Why Herculaneum was chosen by the richest families

Herculaneum was in a privileged position compared to Pompeii. It was situated overlooking the sea on the important coast of the Gulf of Naples and in close proximity to Vesuvius.

This location guaranteed those who lived there not only a breathtaking panoramic view of the sea but also a pleasant climate, making it an ideal place to build luxurious summer residences.

Indeed, wealthy families of the time were attracted by the idyllic landscape and proximity to the region’s major centers of power and commerce. So although small, Herculaneum was chosen by the wealthiest and most influential families of ancient Rome. Also because it was significantly less chaotic, less crowded and safer than nearby Pompeii, which was inhabited by different social classes.

Herculaneum was also renowned for its sumptuous villas, lush gardens, luxurious baths, and the presence of theaters, stores, and entertainment venues. It was precisely for these that the wealthiest and most influential families sought to build and own residences in this little gem, to display their high social status and wealth. The choice of Herculaneum was thus a symbol of prestige and belonging to the elite.

But not only that, it was also a pleasant and lively place to live. Here wealthy Roman families found all the comforts and conveniences they needed to lead a wealthy and refined lifestyle.

The ‘importance of archaeological excavations

Despite the tragic fate that befell Herculaneum, the city has left a significant legacy to history and archaeology. Allowing everyone to learn about the importance, luxury and wealth that characterized this city, despite the tremendous eruption of Vesuvius in 79 AD.

Archaeological excavations, in fact, have revealed valuable details about the daily life, architecture and art of Roman times. Allowing all visitors to observe with their own eyes despite the fact that 2000 years have passed the most important and wonderful riches of this ancient city.

Details that cannot be grasped elsewhere and that only a visit to the city of Herculaneum can give.

So if you have chosen to visit the excavations of Herculaneum, do not dwell only on visiting the houses and frescoes. But totally immerse yourself in its history, thanks to the narration of an experienced tour guide.

Through the guided tour you will be able to fully dive into the tragic history of those who had to leave their homes or those who failed to do so because it was now too late.
