{"id":494,"date":"2022-06-23T14:59:28","date_gmt":"2022-06-23T12:59:28","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seepompeii.com\/luoghi\/la-casa-dello-scheletro-di-ercolano\/"},"modified":"2023-08-02T08:50:09","modified_gmt":"2023-08-02T06:50:09","slug":"the-skeletons-house-of-herculaneum","status":"publish","type":"luoghi","link":"https:\/\/seepompeii.com\/en\/luoghi\/the-skeletons-house-of-herculaneum\/","title":{"rendered":"The skeleton house of Herculaneum"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>The House of the Skeleton of <a href=\"https:\/\/seepompeii.com\/en\/city\/herculaneum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Herculaneum<\/a><\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/seepompeii.com\/en\/city\/herculaneum\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> <\/a>is located in Insula III. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It takes its name from the discovery of a skeleton of a man who failed to escape the fury of the eruption of Mount Vesuvius, during the tremendous eruption of the volcano that struck Herculaneum and neighboring towns.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It was October 24, 79 AD (according to the latest findings in Pompeii) when Vesuvius suddenly began erupting ash and lapilli. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Herculaneum, however, due to its location at the foot of the volcano initially was not hit by the incessant rain of lapilli. From which one enters the atrium of the dwelling of which little remains to be seen, in fact, the skeleton house is one of the few houses in Herculaneum that is not in a good state of preservation. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is due to the fact that many materials were recovered for reuse during the Bourbon excavations. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seepompeii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/CASA-DELLO-SCHELETRO-ERCOLANO-705x1024.jpg\" alt=\"mosaic floor Skeleton house of Herculaneum\" class=\"wp-image-803\" width=\"446\" height=\"653\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>The atrium then leads to a series of rooms, including the tablinum. To protect the house from thieves and birds that could break into it, an iron grate was made on the roof, which is still partly visible today. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Lararium skeleton house of Herculaneum<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the courtyard decorated with frescos on the walls depicting a garden, a small lararium was found. Made entirely of mosaic and marble tesserae and defined with sea shells, which were widely used at the time. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/seepompeii.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/06\/CASA-DELLO-SCHELETRO-4-682x1024.jpg\" alt=\"Lararium small skeleton house of Herculaneum\" class=\"wp-image-806\" width=\"612\" height=\"926\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>In addition to this courtyard, the skeleton house also has another somewhat larger one. It is located on the north side and features a wall with a curved niche covered with glass paste and mosaic tesserae was created.
