Exactly after 20 years, the House of the Vettii in Pompeii reopens.
The mansion underwent major renovations that began several years ago. It opened, in fact, only partially in the atrium area in 2016, only to close again to proceed with the rest of the work.
The House of the Vettii, discovered around 1894, was owned by two slaves, Aulus Vettius Restitutus and Aulus Vettius Conviva, who became wealthy through the wine trade.
A luxurious mansion, it is rich in frescoes especially with erotic themes. Also famous for the famous painting of Priapus (God of abundance) ,found in the entrance of the house, intent on weighing his enormous phallus .
The house underwent a complete restoration, all rooms were recovered, including the garden present inside the peristyle. Here, exact copies of the statues at the time found and currently preserved in the exhibition spaces of the Archaeological Park of Pompeii were inserted. These include the famous statue of Priapus, originally found in the dwelling.
The paintings in it themselves, now eroded by time and previous restoration work, have been restored once again to their period splendor, thanks to new and important redevelopment techniques.
As of today, the House of the Vettii, closed for too long, reopens to the public and can once again be admired in its entirety.
